What are we voting for?

What are we really voting for in this midterm election. The bottom line is, in the United States Senate, we are voting for the future of our country. The future of the United States Supreme Court could be in the balance over the next 6 years, as there could be as many as 6 Supreme Court justices up for retirement. Not to mention what will happen with the War on Terror.

The Supreme Court has handed down some pretty crazy rulings lately including the 5-4 Kelo decision giving the federal state and local governments a free reign to take private property away from individuals for just about any reason. As long as the government comes up with a reason that meets the stringent criteria of for the “public good”, they can take your property. Well I guess it would benefit the government to tear down your house and put up a high rise apartment building, right? More tax revenue for the government and more people would be able to live on that plot of land. Sounds like the common good to me.

Don’t forget about the latest Hamdan decision giving Geneva Convention protection to Terrorists despite the fact that the Geneva Conventions were meant to be applied to signatories of the Conventions (which Al qaeda is not) and would only apply to uniformed P.O.Ws, civilians and organized militias, not shadowing terrorist groups hiding amongst the civilian population. The ruling is a move towards giving more rights to terrorist and possibly, down the road, constitutional rights, which would severely hamper the War on Terror.

What does this mean to the Senate races? Well surely a liberal leaning Democrats would block strict constructionist jurists in favor of activist judges who rule out of their own political leanings. They read into the law instead of applying the laws as written.

Do we want to win the War on Terror? Whatever you think about the Iraq war we are there and we must deal with that responsibly. Make no mistake about it a vote for a Senate Democrat, is a vote for the Democrats in charge of National Security, and will result in a “new direction” in Iraq, that’s called defeat, and that would be a defeat in the war on terror. Not mention we would be stuck getting more activist judges like John Paul Stevens on the bench, which would surely be a defeat for property rights and the War on Terror.
